Speaking for Others – Women’s Poetry as Advocacy

Poets present… and an empty chair

On Thursday 23 October, in Carlton, PEN Melbourne and Liquid Amber Press hosted an evening of poetry as a powerful way to tell the difficult stories of others who cannot speak for themselves.

Angela Costi (The Heart of the Advocate) and EA Gleeson (The Deepest Thing) read and were in conversation with Rose Lucas (Editor, Liquid Amber Press).

The PEN ‘empty chair’ was for imprisoned Iranian poet Mahvesh Sabet and her poems were read by Susan Esmaili in Farsi and English.

This was an important evening – it was an honour to hear the poetry and have a chance to join in the conversation.
