ROSE LUCAS

Remarkable as Breathing

Remarkable as Breathing is a collection of poems both inspired by and reflective of contemplative practice. In their different ways, each poem addresses the business of paying close attention – starting with the breath and moving out into the interconnected world of what Lao Tzu referred to as the ‘10,000 things.’ Poetry, like meditation or indeed like any kind of contemplative practice, invites a reader to pause, look, listen and perceive closely, with intention and with openness, thus facilitating the possibilities of deep listening and insight.

Rose Lucas shows us what happens when poetry is a practice of paying attention. Everything is transfigured: birdcall and beaches, eucalyptus leaves and magnolia flowers, the past and the present, self and other. These poems draw the reader in: we stop to listen, we see the beauty of nature and art with fresh eyes, we enter into the paradox of whirling stillness, we tumble into the surprise of sudden insight.        Miriam Wei Wei Lo

In this luminous book of poetry, Rose Lucas invites us to experience the ordinary as extraordinary, to encounter each moment as a brand new moment, unfolding in hidden wonderment. As she writes so simply and profoundly: ‘on this daily path of walking / a path I’ve never walked before’ Remarkable as Breathing is a true gift of insight. My life has been deeply enriched by these poems and I am delighted to recommend this volume to youBrother Phap Hai
